AOK Wellfleet Artist Retreat Application

Due the Coronavirus, we are not accepting new applications for artist residencies at this time. Please check back for future application dates.

To ensure that we meet our commitment to serving young, emerging artists, applicants must:
  • Be between 18 and 30 years old as of the start of the residency being applied for
  • Be in the early stages of their creative development
  • Have created a modest independent body of work but has yet to establish a solid reputation as an artist among artists, art critics, art buyers and art galleries.
  • Be vocational artists (as opposed to practicing art as a hobby)

Thank you for your interest in being an artist-in-residence at the AOK Wellfleet Artist Retreat. Please provide the requested information and documents and send in one email with the subject line “YOUR NAME, Residency Application” to david@aokarts.org.

  • Please provide your full name, mailing address, email address and phone number.
  • Please indicate which term you are applying for (spring, summer or fall).
  • Please tell us when you want to begin your Wellfleet Residency?
  • How long do you want to spend here? (1 week minimum, 4 week maximum)
  • Please provide an artist statement that answers the following questions. Please limit this to one page.
    • Why do you make the type of art that you do?
    • What does your art represent?
    • What inspires you?
    • How do you make your art?
    • What does your art mean to you?
  • Please provide a Statement of Purpose that answers the following questions. Please limit this to one page.
    • Describe what you would like to accomplish during your time at the Wellfleet Residency.
    • How do you plan to accomplish this?
  • Social Media. Please share links to all your social media.
  • Resume. Please include your current resume.
  • References. Please include 3 references.

Samples of Work

Please submit a work sample that reflects the type of project you will pursue during your residency, and that represents recent, finished work. Work samples may be visual images, video, PDF files or MP3 files, depending on the individual requirements for your artistic discipline (see below for details). You may apply in only one discipline and one genre. Only submit what is requested. Additional support materials (e.g., reviews) will not be considered. Literature


  • Fiction and Nonfiction: PDF, the equivalent of a double-spaced manuscript of no more than 20 pages, about 5,000 words. One or more short stories or essays or a portion of a novel or full-length work of fiction may be submitted. Do not submit a synopsis unless it is necessary for a reader to understand the text.
  • Drama and Libretto: PDF, the equivalent of a double-spaced typescript of no more than 20 pages, about 5,000 words. Those adapting from another genre should provide an appropriate segment of the original work.
  • Poetry: PDF, 10 short one-page poems or appropriate excerpts of a longer poem. The submission should be no more than 10 pages.
  • Translation: PDF, following the requirements for the genre in the original language. Please submit both your translation and the original text.
  • All artists working in a language other than English should submit work samples in both the original language and English translations.

Visual Art


Images are viewed by the Admissions Committee both on personal computer screens and large screen projection.
  • Required: Seven jpg digital images.
  • Optional: Documentary or elemental video of an installation.

Music Composition


Instrumental forms (symphonic, chamber music, band), vocal forms (opera, choral, songs), electronic music, music for film, sound art.
  • Two separate musical scores: PDF (10 MB/each).
  • Recordings of one or both scores: MP3 (30 MB/each).
  • For works created without a score, a brief statement (PDF) should be included.

Performance


Performance art, theater, choreography, multimedia, and/or collaborative and other works incorporating live performance.
  • Required: Video documentation of up to three excerpts totaling 10 minutes in length. Please submit continuous excerpts, as opposed to a trailer of your work. Video links or direct uploads may be included. Each video must be under 60MB, saved as mov, flv or wmv. The recommended dimension is 640 x 480px. If submitting a link, please make sure it is available from the time of submission through application notification. The admissions panel cannot access links set with privacy settings.
  • Required: Brief description in PDF form of the documented performance(s), 250 words maximum, including date, location, and major collaborators.

Film & Video


Videos and films which are principally cinematic in nature.
  • Required: Video documentation of up to three excerpts totaling 10 minutes in length. Please submit continuous excerpts, as opposed to a trailer of your work. Video links or direct uploads may be included. Each video must be under 60MB, saved as mov, flv or wmv. The recommended dimension is 640 x 480px. If submitting a link, please make sure it is available from the time of submission through application notification. The admissions panel cannot access links set with privacy settings.
  • Optional: Brief written explanation (PDF).

Screenwriters


  • Required: PDF of a screenplay, no more than 10,000 words. May include a brief synopsis if necessary.
